It seems like every generation of new vehicle boasts more technologies to make driving safer. Any Los Angeles auto accident lawyer will attest to the fact that some of these new features can help reduce the likelihood of a collision — or at least reduce their severity. Still, they do not replace good driving behaviors.
Common Technologies That Make a Difference
Recent information from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety looks at some of the more commonly-available crash avoidance technologies. While some features, such as antilock brake systems are almost universally available at this point, the following technologies are still relatively new, but increasingly-available:
- Front crash prevention: Some vehicles use a number of types of sensors that recognize vehicles in front. When they determine that a vehicle is getting too close, they typically issue a warning of the approaching danger. Many systems actually apply the brakes automatically, either preventing the crash or reducing the impact. Less commonly, some systems can also detect pedestrians in a vehicle's path, or likely to enter the path.
- Lane departure: As long as clear lane markings appear on a road, some vehicles can sense when a vehicle is likely to stray into another lane. Some systems sound audible alarms or even vibrate the wheel or seat to alert the driver. Others go an additional step by interacting with steering or braking lightly.
- Blind spot detection: All vehicles have blind spots, so adding sensors that monitor the sides of vehicles can help prevent collisions with unseen vehicles. Some systems sound an alert when a driver signals a turn that would cause an accident with an unseen vehicle. Others actually initiate braking or steering changes to prevent accidents.
- Backover prevention and parking assistance: A camera in the back of a vehicle and a screen on the dashboard allows drivers to obtain a clear view of the area in back when they shift to reverse. Some of these features go extra steps by recognizing vehicles that may cross the path and automatically applying the brakes.
Safe Driving Responsibilities Still Fall With Drivers
Clearly, these and other technologies are likely to reduce the incidence of traffic accidents over time, but they do not replace safe and attentive driving. Drivers should never develop a false sense of security that causes them to become complacent behind the wheel. Additionally, since too many alarms can be annoying, the systems are completely ineffective when drivers deactivate them.
Just as important, when a safety system fails to operate properly, drivers could potentially hold manufacturers accountable for defective systems.
