Why Head-On Collisions Can Cause Severe Injuries

The physics of head-on collisions make them particularly injurious. In a head-on collision, the impact is equal to the magnitude of both vehicles, taking into account speed and size of each vehicle. If one automobile is smaller than the other — such as an accident between a compact car and a commercial vehicle — the smaller automobile bears the brunt of the force.

Causes of Head-On Collisions

A head-on crash usually occurs when an automobile crosses the centerline into traffic moving in the opposite direction. A driver may also accidentally enter a lane of traffic the wrong way because of unclear street signs, unfamiliarity with the area, speed, sleeplessness, distraction or drunkenness.

Our attorneys collect evidence on the state of the driver who hit you to determine fault. For example, we review cell phone records to investigate whether the driver was texting or talking on the phone when she or he entered your lane. Our lawyers also check hours of service logs if a commercial vehicle crossed the centerline into your lane.

Road Design Flaws

Most head-on crashes happen on rural roads and undivided two-lane roads in the outskirts of L.A. However, drunk, confused and distracted drivers also often cause head-on crashes in Los Angeles city limits. Properly designed roads can reduce the likelihood of a head-on crash and minimize injuries should a head-on crash occur. Municipal, California and federal transportation departments can improve conditions by:

  • Installing centerline rumble strips
  • Installing divider barriers that absorb crash impact while deflecting the direction of a car that hits them
  • Designing two-land roads with wider cross-sections
  • Including a narrow buffer median between lanes
  • Making center left-turn lanes part of two- and four-lane road design
  • Increasing visibility of signage to alert drivers entering a roadway in the wrong direction

Jeffrey is incredible to work with. Within a few years I was hit horribly twice from behind. Once in my Vespa and most recently by someone who was speeding on the highway in pouring rain. Both times Jeff responded quickly, guided me through the process, made it very simple, was always understanding and handled the situation efficiently.
